There’s No “i” in Watch: A Brief History in Naming the Apple Watch

Posted on April 14, 2015 by AUTHOR (edit in theme settings)

By now you have heard about the release of Apple’s latest creation the Apple Watch. Unlike other products from the tech giant, the smart watch doesn’t follow the name trend that the iPad, iPhone and iPod do.

The reason behind the missing character is simply a trademark one. When New York based company, M.Z. Berger & Co. filed to trademark the iWatch name in June 2007 they were put to a stop by Swiss watch maker Swatch. They had argued that the iWatch name would confuse the Swatch consumer base. In 2008, the firm Probendi gained the rights to the iWatch name within the European Union and have since released a legal statement on their website.

Back in September of 2012, OMG Electronics had applied for the iWatch trademark in an attempt to create a smartwatch. The company then set out to raise capital for the device through crowdfunding on the popular website Indiegogo. Unfortunately they had fallen short and only raised $1434 of the $100,000 that they were originally seeking.

On a global scale the release of the Apple Watch could be delayed in Switzerland due to the name being protected by a trademark owned by Leonard Timepieces. While Apple has run into these issues in the past, we bet that it won’t stop the mass market from mistaking this device as the iWatch during it’s anticipated release.
